As the worlds of global sport and entertainment collide this summer, Washington Square Films is proud to lead production on campaigns spotlighting some of the biggest names in soccer (or fútbol), Formula 1, tennis, and other major sporting milestones. With the FIFA World Cup 2026 on the horizon and the Formula 1 season underway, our athlete-driven campaigns place authenticity, fandom, and human connection at the center of storytelling.
Most recently, we once again produced Lay’s latest “No Lay’s, No Game” activation alongside Slap Global and hungryman Productions, bringing together Lionel Messi, David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Alexia Putellas, and Steve Carell for “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS_05OLVkxU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Epic Watch Party</a>.” The campaign, which launched ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, has already generated widespread coverage across outlets such as <a href="https://adage.com/creativity/work/aa-lays-epic-watch-party/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ad Age</a>, <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/91535830/the-unique-marketing-strategy-behind-lays-fifa-world-cup-2026-campaigns" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fast Company</a>, and <a href="https://www.marketingdive.com/news/lays-world-cup-marketing-focuses-on-scaled-intimacy-with-fans/819306/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Marketing Dive</a> for its fan-first approach and star-studded cast. Beyond football, WSF also recently produced campaigns centered around two of the world’s most recognizable athletes: Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams. Joshua Z Weinstein&#8217;s latest feature HERE I&#8217;M ALIVE has been selected to World Premiere as part of the Tribeca Film Festival in the U.S. Narrative Competition, running from June 3-14!
The feature was helmed by Weinstein, written by Weinstein and Brian Perkins, and produced by Joshua Z Weinstein and Daniel Finkelman. Executive producers include Han West, Josh Blum, and Brian Perkins. The film stars Cheyenne Gallagher, Eddie Torrenegra, Caleb Zuzga, Krystaly Figueroa, and Emira D’Spain. The film follows migrants, sex workers, and dreamers as they navigate the city’s digital underbelly, propelled by a sonic backdrop of underground rap and spiritual jazz. Unflinching and immersive,  HERE I&#8217;M ALIVE delivers a portrait of modern city life that is both intimate and electrifying.
As a lauded filmmaker, Weinstein&#8217;s feature film <a href="https://wsfilms.com/directors/joshua-z-weinstein/a24-menashe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MENASHE</a> was released by A24, and nominated for a Gotham Award for “Breakthrough Director” as well as an Indie Spirit Award for “Best First Feature.” His previous film projects have shown at Sundance, Berlin, and Camerimage, and he has helmed documentaries including DRIVERS WANTED, FLYING ON ENGINE, and I BEAT MIKE TYSON.

The Harder They Come has opened at The Royal Stratford East Theater in London!
Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, and Olivier award-winning director Matthew Xia, bring to life a new musical adaptation of the 1972 movie, The Harder They Come.
The breakthrough film, produced and directed by Perry Henzell and co-written with Trevor Rhone, follows Ivanhoe Martin, a rural dreamer who arrives in Kingston to become a star. He falls in love and cuts a record, but his rise is blocked by corrupt gatekeepers and a rigged system. Refusing to back down, Ivan fights to assert agency over his own existence, transforming into both outlaw and folk hero. His song becomes an island-wide anthem of resistance and hope.
Featuring Grammy Award-winner Jimmy Cliff’s hits, such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “Many Rivers to Cross” and “The Harder They Come.”
&#8220;Electrifying&#8230;sweet and sandy and catchy as hell&#8221; — so says <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2025/sep/24/the-harder-they-come-review-reggae-musical" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Guardian</a> in one of the many 5-star reviews accorded to The Harder They Come.
The Guardian goes on to praise director Matthew Xia&#8217;s production as a &#8220;galvanising spirit of protest, justice and power-to-the-people kinship,&#8221; blending comedy and tragedy in a narrative that spans playful, catchy quips and heartfelt drama. &#8220;There are only Aces in this deck.&#8221;
<a href="https://www.broadwayworld.com/westend/article/Review-THE-HARDER-THEY-COME-Theatre-Royal-Stratford-East-20250923" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Broadway World</a> called the musical a &#8220;late summer smash,&#8221; breathing new life into the cult-classic 1972 film story with gorgeous set pieces and characters, and musical numbers churning &#8220;hit after hit&#8221; via live band. They go on: &#8220;The show moves effortlessly between exultation, longing, defiance, heartbreak. The musical numbers are integral to everything we see: they lift the mood, deepen the impact of the plot points and give interior life to Ivan’s hopes and disillusionment.&#8221;
<a href="https://www.whatsonstage.com/news/the-harder-they-come-at-stratford-east-review_1695800/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">What&#8217;sOnStage</a> calls Suzan-Lori Parks&#8217; adaptation compelling, remarking on the focus on Ivan&#8217;s emotional journey as the musical&#8217;s core tenet. &#8220;This tonal shift transforms what was once a gritty crime drama into something altogether more uplifting.&#8221; They add: &#8220;Matthew Xia’s direction crackles with visceral energy, whilst Shelley Maxwell’s choreography gives everything a natural rhythm that permeates the entire production like a collective heartbeat.&#8221;
<a href="https://www.allthatdazzles.co.uk/post/review-the-harder-they-come-stratford-east" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AllThatDazzles</a> agreed with this sentiment, adding in its own 5-star review: &#8220;By their official opening, the team had crafted something so vivid, so extraordinary, and so alive with kinetic energy and clarity of vision, that it was as if I was seeing every scene, hearing every song, for the first time all over again.&#8221; Not to be outdone, <a href="https://theartsdesk.com/theatre/harder-they-come-stratford-east-review-still-packs-punch-half-century" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Arts Desk</a> likened the ensemble to &#8220;West End performances&#8221;, praising the cast and Xia&#8217;s direction as reaching heights that were &#8220;operatic in its scale and power. For once, the adjective spine-tingling is not a reviewer’s metaphorical flourish, but a literal description. I can think of no better a recommendation than that.&#8221;

Washington Square Films has signed director Jihye for commercial representation. With a successful background as a producer and director, Jihye&#8217;s directorial work is guided by fun and effective collaboration. She has directed spots for top brands including Ford, Jordan, Bud Light, Toyota, HBO, Equinox and McDonald&#8217;s among numerous others. Most recently, she was tapped to direct a piece (“Art from the Start”) for Instagram featuring photographer and digital artist, Natalia Seth, out of creative agency, DEPT.

Jihye&#8217;s journey into the film industry is a distinctive one. She spent the first seven years of her life on a farm in the boondocks of South Korea before making her way onto the streets of New York City. Fluent in both Korean and English, she has an innate ability to connect with diverse people and their stories, a skill she attributes to her unique and adaptive upbringing.
In middle school, Jihye broke her mom&#8217;s brain by announcing that she wouldn&#8217;t be pursuing any of the five careers that had been presumed for her: doctor, lawyer, teacher, pastor, or pastor&#8217;s wife. &#8220;Instead, I told the both of us that I was going to become a director. Neither of us knew how to actually get there.&#8221;

When she started as a production assistant, she supplemented her income with voice-over work and became the Korean voice for legacy landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Van Gogh exhibit in Amsterdam. Jihye then cut her teeth as a commercial and interactive producer working with the likes of Lady Gaga and Bud Light while directing her own self-funded stories. This parallel approach combined her proficiency in effectively leading projects and teams with her creative sensibilities and directorial voice.
Jihye brings an intimate human-centered approach to her directing. She has a fierce yet compassionate talent for distilling complex creative to intimate, approachable and emotional films. The intention that she brings to her process is rare in the industry. She adds, &#8220;I&#8217;m thrilled to make good stories with good people like Han and the team at Washington Square Films. With them, I’m confident we will level up interesting ways to tell stories, both classic and new.&#8221;

NYT Highlights the Best Films Since 2000—13 WSF Productions Make the List

Washington Square Films has signed award-winning director <a href="https://wsfilms.com/directors/julio-palacio/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Julio Palacio</a> for commercial representation. His work has earned accolades at prestigious festivals such as Tribeca, Cleveland, Slamdance, and Atlanta. His client list includes Google, 3M, Daimler Mercedes, MasterCard, and Stanley Black &amp; Decker, among others.
His latest short documentary, Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World, was recently acquired by Netflix for distribution on December 11, 2024, and shortlisted for the 97th Academy Awards in the Documentary Short Film category. The film also earned Best Documentary Short at the Tribeca Film Festival and other honors at the Indy Shorts International Film Festival, Slamdance, Cleveland, Cordillera, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta Film Festival; as well as nominations for the Critics Documentary Choice Awards, and Cinema Eye Honors.

Washington Square Films Signs Director Julio Palacio for Commercial Representation

Pedro Almodóvar&#8217;s The Room Next Door, starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, wins the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 81st Venice International Film Festival!
This is Almodóvar’s first US production and first English-language feature film and WSF&#8217;s Joshua Blum &amp; Han West served as Executive Producers in New York. Washington Square Films served as the NY production company.
The Room Next Door follows the story of a very imperfect mother and a spiteful daughter separated by a serious misunderstanding. Between them, another woman, Ingrid (Julianne Moore), the mother’s friend, is the keeper of their pain and bitterness. Martha, the mother (played by Tilda Swinton), is a war reporter and Ingrid an auto-fictional novelist. The film addresses the endless cruelty of war, the very different ways in which the two female authors approach and write about reality, death, friendship, and sexual pleasure as the best allies in the fight against horror.
The film is scheduled to open theatrically in New York City and Los Angeles on December 20, 2024, followed by a limited release in select US cities on Christmas Day, and a January 2025 wide US release.

In his directorial debut, Nnamdi Asomugha’s The Knife tells the story of Chris (Nnamdi Asomugha), who’s sole want is to carve a promising future for his beloved wife Alex (Aja Naomi King) and their two girls; a young family chasing the American Dream. One fateful night, Chris’ entire world is shaken to its core as a stranger mysteriously shows up in their humble abode. Distressed by the events of the night and the revelations seemingly at every turn, the family must also contend with the steadfast Detective Carlsen (Melissa Leo) who’s eager to solve the mystery of their intrusion. Asomugha also produced and starred in WSF’s Crown Heights (2017). The film will have its world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival 2024. Director/Writer Nathan Silver’s Between the Temples tells the story of Ben (Jason Schwartzman), a young widower reeling from the sudden death of his wife, living at home with his meddling mothers who not-so-subtly push him to start dipping a toe back into the dating scene. As a cantor at the local synagogue, suddenly a sense of purpose and unexpected connection shows up in the form of Carla (Carol Kane), his septuagenarian elementary school music teacher who yearns to become a bat mitzvah. While he initially balks at the idea, Carla’s off-kilter yet refreshing takes on the world prove to be the shake-up he needs to start participating in his own life. Their work studying Torah morphs into a friendship that begins to bleed into the personal as they find surprising solace in each other’s presence. Everyone at Washington Square Films extends heartfelt congratulations to Suzan-Lori Parks for her astounding achievement, selected as one of <a href="https://time.com/collection/100-most-influential-people-2023/6269454/suzan-lori-parks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Time Magazine&#8217;s 100 Most Influential People of 2023</a>. SLP penned the musical adaptation of the 1972 film The Harder They Come that debuted this February, executive produced by our own Joshua Blum and Bruce Miller, and recent additions Carmelo Anthony and Asani Swan. The playwright phenom won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her 2001 smash hit Topdog/Underdog, making her the first African-American woman to achieve the honor. She is currently performing in her pandemic-era piece Plays for the Plague Year.

The release follows a critically-acclaimed world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival this January, where it received a standing ovation from a spellbound audience. We&#8217;re happy to share that director/DP/photographer <a href="https://wsfilms.com/directors/erik-curtis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Erik Curtis</a> has signed with Washington Square Films for his first commercial representation.

Erik brings a distinct ability to elicit authentic performances in his work, from both actors and real people. His talent for creating comfortable environments that allow actors to interact with the camera as an additional character has also traversed into the digital realm, navigating COVID-spurred production challenges by filming with skeleton crews and virtual personnel on imperative projects. His ads span top brands like Universal Orlando, Spectrum, Publix, Visit Florida, and Hertz, among numerous others. Having previously worked in a freelance capacity with Washington Square Films for a number of years, he officially joins the company’s directorial roster with a number of projects already in production.

We want to extend a huge congratulations to Ben Snyder and Ari Issler for the acceptance of their film Allswell to the Tribeca Film Festival in the U.S. Narrative Competition. Directed by Ben and produced by Ari and Ben, among others, the film spotlights three Nuyorican sisters as they rise to life&#8217;s challenges balancing career and family, all while the strength of their sisterhood proves a balm for their chaotic worlds.

The film was additionally produced by Gia Walsh, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Vince Jolivette, Paul Jarrett and Kara Baker, in association with Washington Square Films, with Liza Colon-Zayas, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Felix Solis, Max Cassella, Michael Rispoli, Shirley Rodriguez, MacKenzie Lansing, and J. Congratulations to our friend and client Kerry Washington for being featured on the cover of TIME Magazine’s ‘Women of the Year’ issue.

Kerry is recognized for her work both on and off-screen as an actor, producer, director, and activist.  She is, of course, well known for playing the iconic Olivia Pope on Scandal, as well as for producing and starring in Little Fires Everywhere and the Broadway and Netflix productions of American Son under her Simpson Street production company. Washington has been involved with many social and political causes, including her service on President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. In 2013, Washington was honored with the NAACP President’s Award, recognizing her special achievements in furthering the cause of civil rights and public service. In 2014, Time magazine included Washington on its annual Time 100 list of the Most Influential People in the World. She received the GLAAD Media Vanguard Award in 2015 and the ACLU Bill of Rights Award in 2016. She was a co-chair of Mrs. Obama&#8217;s When We All Vote campaign and is the Founder of Influence Change, a strategic initiative that partners with high impact, non profit organizations to increase voter turnout. She is also a co-chair of the Black Voices for Black Justice Fund, an organization dedicated to funding and amplifying the voices of Black leaders who are helping build a more equitable America. In 2021, Washington partnered with the Movement Voter Project to launch a Cohort of 10 grassroots organizations to provide them with resources and storytelling support to scale their impact as they advocate for an equitable democracy.

Already nominated for the Sundance NEXT Innovator Award, the fantasy feature follows a group of Cryptozookeepers who try to capture a Baku (a dream-eating hybrid creature of legend.) They begin to wonder if they should display these rare beasts in the confines of a cryptozoo, or if these mythical creatures should remain hidden and unknown.

Animated action thriller Cryptozoo, co-produced by Washington Square Films and Low Spark Films and directed by Dash Shaw and Jane Samborski, will be available in theaters and on TVOD starting this Saturday, August 21.

The 95 minute fantasy film, which features the voices of Michael Cera, <a href="https://wsfilms.com/directors/spielbergs">Alex Karpovsky</a> and Grace Zabriskie, follows a group of Cryptozookeepers trying to capture a dream-eating hybrid creature of legend named Baku. They begin to wonder if they should display these rare beats or keep them hidden and unknown. 
Cryptozoo was presented at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and won the Sundance NEXT Innovator Award presented by Adobe before being sold to Magnolia Pictures for distribution.

Cryptozoo took flight at the virtual 2021 Sundance Film Festival, held Thursday, January 28 through Wednesday, February 3.
Military brat Lauren spent her childhood nights in a nightmarish state, until a mythical baku came to eat her dreams, releasing her from nocturnal torment. Lauren decides to dedicate her life to rescuing and sheltering cryptids from those who seek to exploit them, so she becomes a cryptozookeeper. But when Lauren’s and Amber’s paths cross, Lauren begins to wonder if displaying these rare beasts in confinement is better than enabling these mythical creatures to remain hidden and unknown
Co-produced by Washington Square Films and Low Spark Films, the film was written and directed by filmmaker/animator, Dash Shaw, who also helmed the festival darling My Entire High School School Sinking Into The Sea (2016). Shaw won the NEXT Innovator Prize presented by Adobe for the film, rapidly sold to Magnolia Pictures for distribution.

Cryptozoo Premieres at Sundance 2021, Sells to Magnolia Pictures

Congratulations to our own roster director <a href="https://wsfilms.com/directors/braden-king" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Braden King</a>&#8211;Strand Releasing has acquired North American rights to his Sundance 2020 selection The Evening Hour. We&#8217;re excited for audiences to get to experience this poignant crime drama with a tentative Spring release. Based on the novel by Carter Sickels and screen written by Elizabeth Palmore, the Kentucky-based film authentically spotlights the isolated culture of Appalachia and its strong-willed people, alongside their struggles under the yoke of the coal-mining industry and the threat of drug addiction.
