Richard Gray

Richard Gray was named as one of five finalists in both 2005 and 2006 for the Fred Ebb Award honoring up-and-coming new musical theater writers.

Current projects include the musical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Flea and The Professor with Jordan Harrison, presented at the 2010 New Vision/New Voices Festival at the Kennedy Center for Philadelphia’s Arden Theater Company, and Lyle Lyle Crocodile with Kevin Kling for Seattle Children’s Theatre (2010).

A recent collaboration Martin Charnin (Love Is Love) has received productions at the Village Theatre in Issaquah, WA and the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Jupiter FL. His musical, Cold Turkey (for which he wrote the book, music, and lyrics) received a reading and workshop at the Village Theatre’s New Works Festival. His revue, Forbidden Xmas, has been a fixture of the Seattle holiday scene for over 15 years including stints at the Cabaret de Paris, Tacoma Actors’ Guild, and Empty Space Theatre.

Two of his full-length musical scores that were first heard at Seattle Children’s Theatre, Time Again in Oz and Little Rock have been performed in theaters across the country. Richard also wrote and directed The Mom and Pop Show, Bummer! Shoot!, and The Donk Sisters for the Cabaret de Paris. He has also written the scores for A Day at the Beach and Kenny’s Window at Seattle Children’s Theatre; History of the Roller Coaster with Scott Warrender for FringeACT; It Happened at the World’s Fair and Northwest Bookshelf for the 5th Avenue Theatre’s Adventure Musical Theater Program; (L)imitations of Life at the Empty Space; and music for seven Shakespeare productions at Tacoma Actors’ Guild.

Recent recordings include Susannah Mars’ CD “Call it Home: The Music of Richard Gray” (LML Music), a track on “Broadway’s Greatest Gifts: Carols for a Cure” (2008), as well as Rodgers & …, a musical retrospective of Richard Rodgers through his collaborations with five different lyricists.
